That's where the seven habits of highly effective people come in: We must allow ourselves to undergo paradigm shifts - to change ourselves fundamentally and not just alter our attitudes and behaviors on the surface level - in order to achieve true change. "The way we see the problem is the problem," Covey writes. They don't address the underlying condition. They see a successful person, team, or organization and ask, "How do you do it? Teach me your techniques!" But these "shortcuts" that we look for, hoping to save time and effort and still achieve the desired result, are simply band-aids that will yield short-term solutions. But starting around the 1920s, the way people viewed success shifted to what Covey calls "personality ethic" (where success is a function of personality, public image, attitudes, and behaviors). In earlier times, the foundation of success rested upon character ethic (things like integrity, humility, fidelity, temperance, courage, justice, patience, industry, simplicity, modesty, and the Golden Rule). In studying over 200 years of literature on the concept of "success," Covey identified a very important change in the way that humans have defined success over time. In order to change a given situation, we must change ourselves, and in order to change ourselves, we must be able to change our perceptions. The book opens with an explanation of how many individuals who have achieved a high degree of outward success still find themselves struggling with an inner need for developing personal effectiveness and growing healthy relationships with other people.Ĭovey believes the way we see the world is entirely based on our own perceptions. What habits do highly effective people have? It is written on Covey's belief that the way we see the world is entirely based on our own perceptions. 3/14/2023 0 Comments Naca budget workbookRegulation prohibited savings banks from branching across state lines and sometimes even limited branching within states, inhibiting competition, the most powerful defense against discrimination. Banking in the 1970s, when CRA was passed, was a highly regulated industry in which small, local savings banks, rather than commercial banks, provided most home mortgages. None of these justifications holds up, however, because of the changes that reshaped America's banking industry in the 1990s. Going one step further, the Treasury Department recently asserted that banks that do figure out ways to reach inner-city borrowers might not be able to stop competitors from using similar methods-and therefore would not undertake such marketing in the first place without a push from Washington. They just needed a push from the law to learn how to identify profitable inner-city lending opportunities. In addition, the Act's backers claimed, CRA would be profitable for banks. Implicit in the bill's rationale was a belief that CRA was needed to counter racial discrimination in lending, an assumption that later seemed to gain support from a widely publicized 1990 Federal Reserve Bank of Boston finding that blacks and Hispanics suffered higher mortgage-denial rates than whites, even at similar income levels. CRA decreed that banks have "an affirmative obligation" to meet the credit needs of the communities in which they are chartered, and that federal banking regulators should assess how well they do that when considering their requests to merge or to open branches. The Act, which Jimmy Carter signed in 1977, grew out of the complaint that urban banks were "redlining" inner-city neighborhoods, refusing to lend to their residents while using their deposits to finance suburban expansion. The CRA's logic also helps to ensure that inner-city neighborhoods stay poor by discouraging the kinds of investment that might make them better off. As enforced today, though, the law portends just the opposite, threatening to undermine the efforts of the upwardly mobile poor by saddling them with neighbors more than usually likely to depress property values by not maintaining their homes adequately or by losing them to foreclosure. The CRA's premise sounds unassailable: helping the poor buy and keep homes will stabilize and rebuild city neighborhoods. banks have committed nearly $1 trillion for inner-city and low-income mortgages and real estate development projects, most of it funneled through a nationwide network of left-wing community groups, intent, in some cases, on teaching their low-income clients that the financial system is their enemy and, implicitly, that government, rather than their own striving, is the key to their well-being. Speaking of which, top catching prospect Francisco Alvarez, while red-hot at Double-A Binghamton, is probably still a long shot to come up this year. The Mets aren’t likely to give up the prospects it would take. The guitar line in the chorus was previously used in the Stabbing Westward song 'Ungod' in 1994. The Diamondbacks “have never shown any interest in trading ,” says a rival exec. Teams do expect late sellers and late buyers as trade-deadline decisions are often made at the eleventh hour, and the hope is that the trade market will look better than it does today, when it threatens to be highlighted mostly by Frankie Montas, Willson Contreras, Andrew Benintendi, Trey Mancini, a couple Reds starters and a bunch of middling relievers. So until further notice, we’ll consider a Hader trade to fall somewhere between wishful thinking and a pipe dream. While the Brewers have been inconsistent offensively (losers of eight of 10 entering Thursday, three by shutout) and suffered injuries to star starters Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta, they have made the playoffs four straight years and are seen as “scary” in October due to excellent starting pitching. McGready started the concerts of prayer, but he also got his congregations praying for him and for his ministry of the word of God – for a half hour before they went to bed on Saturday night and for a half hour when they woke up on Sunday morning. He said that the winter of 1799 for the most part was weeping and mourning with the people of God and that it was like living in Sodom and Gomorrah on the rough, lawless, and often godless frontier. In Kentucky he pastored three small churches that met in roughly built shacks. This is reminiscent of what God did in a man named James McGready on the frontiers of Kentucky starting in the 1790s. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them: Peter had to work with others to get the job done. “Here the dumb fishes do clearly preach Christ to be the Son of God.” (Trapp)ī. But when Jesus directs our work, we see results and we always miss something great when we make excuses instead of allowing Jesus to direct our work. We can work – even work hard – for a long time with no results. When Jesus directs our work, it makes all the difference. The only reason why Peter did what Jesus asked was because he believed in Jesus, not because the circumstances seemed right. Peter understood that he probably knew more about fishing than a carpenter did and that he had worked all night without any results. They caught a great number of fish: Peter didn’t make such excuses, and His faith in Jesus was well rewarded. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.Ī. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. (6-7) The miraculous catch of fish.Īnd when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. At Your word empires rise and fall history unfolds His great plan.At Your word creation is held together and sustained. At Your word, the sun, moon, stars, and planets were created.God’s people throughout all ages have lived and gone forth with this confidence in the word of Jesus. At Your word I will let down the net: This was Peter’s great statement of faith, and trust in Jesus’ word. “Jesus may know religion, but He doesn’t know fishing.”ĭ.“All these crowds and loud teaching have scared the fish away.”.“The best fishing is at night, not in the day time.”.“I know a lot more about fishing than a carpenter does.”.We have toiled all night and caught nothing nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net: Peter could have come up with any number of possible excuses. The word has the ideas “commander,” “leader,” or perhaps even “boss.” With this title, Peter showed he was willing to take orders from Jesus.Ĭ. Master, we have toiled all night: The particular ancient Greek word Luke used for Master ( epistata) is unique to Luke’s Gospel. If you catch a glimpse of his approving smile as he watches you, you will work right heartily.” (Spurgeon)ī. “It is a blessed thing to see Christ sitting in the boat while you cast out the net. As far as we can tell, Jesus was in the boat with them as He directed this. Peter could not give something to Jesus without Jesus giving even more back to him. He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets”: After Jesus had finished teaching, He wanted to do something good for Simon, who had lent Him the use of the boat. When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.”Ī. (4-5) Peter receives as Jesus directs his service. We can also be sure that Simon listened to this teaching all the more attentively. One of the boats, which was Simon’s: Simon must have felt privileged that Jesus wanted to teach from his boat. It was also sometimes called the Sea of Tiberias.Ĭ. The Lake of Gennesaret: This was another name for the Sea of Galilee, as it is more familiarly known. “Note the many strange pulpits in which Christ preached.” (Morrison)ī. The crowd was so big that Jesus got into one of the boats and taught the multitudes from the boat. The multitude pressed around Him to hear the word of God: The large crowd showed the increasing popularity of Jesus as a teacher. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.Ī. Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3/14/2023 0 Comments Chimpanzee iqIt turns out that they share some of our brain power as well. We share almost 99 percent of our DNA (the little bits of genetic code that make us who we are) with them. Smartest Animals: Chimpanzees Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, so its no surprise they make the list for most intelligent animals. Why are chimpanzees the most intelligent animal? 8 What are the enemies of a chimpanzee?.7 What is the average IQ of a chimpanzee?.2 Is a chimpanzee smarter than a human?. 1 Why are chimpanzees the most intelligent animal?.This acceleration went side by side with the development of tools, the use of fire and undoubtedly communication within small groups. But in the hominin lineage, it increased much more quickly than in other primates. The rate of blood flow to the brain appears to have increased over time in all primate lineages. This indicates each gram of brain matter was using almost twice as much energy, evidently due to greater synaptic activity and information processing. How our species got smarter: through a rush of blood to the headīetween the 4.4 million year old Ardipithecus and Homo sapiens, brains became almost five times larger, but blood flow rate grew more than nine times larger. For hominins, the growth was even quicker than in other primates. This suggests the metabolic intensity of primate brains – the amount of energy each gram of brain matter consumes each second – increased faster than expected as brain size increased. In mammals, doubling the size of an organ will normally increase its metabolic rate only by a factor of about 1.7. This is unexpected because the metabolic rate of most organs increases more slowly with organ size. This means if the size of the brain doubles, the rate of blood flow also doubles. In humans and many other living primates, the rate of internal carotid artery blood flow appears to be directly proportional to brain size. Over time, the brains of our ancestors required more and more energy. The size of the internal carotid arteries can be found by measuring the size of the holes that allow them through the base of the skull. We initially established the relationship between blood flow rate and artery size from 50 studies involving ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging of mammals. The rate of flow is in turn related to how much oxygen an organ requires. Just as a plumber would install larger water pipes to accommodate a higher flow rate to a larger building, the circulatory system adjusts the sizes of blood vessels to match the rate of blood flow in them. The size of these arteries is related to the rate of blood flow through them. The blood flow to the cognitive part of the brain, the cerebrum, comes through two internal carotid arteries. It is the same with the brain: the higher the cognitive function, the higher the metabolic rate, the greater the blood flow and the larger the arteries that supply the blood. The greater a computer’s capacity, the more power it needs to stay running – and the bigger its electrical supply cables need to be. In this regard, we can view the brain as a rather energy-expensive supercomputer. This changes remarkably little, whether a person is awake, asleep, exercising or solving tricky maths problems. The human brain requires about 10 mL of blood every second. Because blood supplies essential oxygen to the brain, it’s closely related to synaptic energy use. To understand how much energy the brains of our ancestors used, we focused on the rate of blood flow to the brain. Human intelligence: why are we the smartest primates? Some 70% of that energy is used by the synapses to produce neurochemicals that transfer information between neurons. Although it occupies only 2% of the body, the brain uses about 20% of the energy of a resting person. The human brain contains more than 80 billion neurons and up to 1,000 trillion synapses. The synapses are the sites of information processing, much like the transistor switches of a computer. Information processing in the brain involves nerve cells (neurons) and the connections between them (synapses). Other studies of mammals in general indicate the brain’s metabolic rate – how much energy it needs to run – is nearly proportional to its size. This is not an unreasonable assumption for living primates, the number of nerve cells in the brain is almost proportional to the brain’s volume. Researchers have often assumed increases in intelligence in human ancestors (hominins) occurred as brains grew larger. 3/14/2023 0 Comments Cheap 5 gallon bucketsThe empty buckets are washed out, aired out for a day or two and then refilled. Rose quartz typically manifests as a brilliant shade of pink: the kind of pink found at children’s birthday parties, and on barbie dolls. There are also references occasionally made to pink quartz, as well as the very innocent “love stone”. Some also refer to rose quartz as hyaline quartz. Rose quartz, in the right shade, can resemble lighter rubies and was thus playfully named the ruby of the Bohemians, a community notorious for having little means but a flair for shiny goods. Throughout history, rubies have always been a considerably unaffordable gemstone, available only to the elite in society. In the United States, it is not uncommon for rose quartz to be referred to as bohemian ruby. This applies to our friend rose quartz, as it has adopted a number of different names due to its presence in places around the world. Let’s begin… Other Names for Rose QuartzĪs William Shakespeare so eloquently put it: "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”. You need nothing more than a hopeful nature and willing heart. Any object that promises help in this regard is generally taken very seriously, even by those who would usually be considered skeptics of the metaphysical. Rose quartz’ reputation precedes itself, as much of the world spends their time overanalyzing the subject of love: how to find it, how to keep it, or even how to feel it toward oneself. In this article we discuss the following: Truth be told, there is a lot more than meets the eye with this particular stone - read on and we’ll tell you everything. When it comes to love, there are no crystals quite as experienced in the field as rose quartz. Subsequent irradiation produces color centers that give the crystal its pink color. In this article, we reveal the secrets of rose quartz, including why you need it in your life and how to use it. Some of these impurities replace silicon in the quartz lattice. Growers produce pink color in transparent synthetic quartz by growing it with impurities of aluminum and phosphorous. Research by Russian crystal growers on synthetic pink quartz has demonstrated a color-causing mechanism, which can cause results very similar to the natural material. Material from some of these deposits will fade when exposed to natural light, but its color can be restored by irradiation. This specimen measures 15.5 x 8 inches (39 x 20 cm) and features a core of smoky quartz that resembles a human form surrounded by a glittering halo of transparent pink quartz crystals. In 2013, a superb example called La Madona Rosa (the Pink Madonna) sold for $662,500. The best are often left as mineral specimens, which can command high prices at auction. The finest examples are from Brazil, especially a deposit near Galiléia, located near Governador Valadares in the state of Minas Gerais. It might occur as beautiful clusters of transparent, well-formed crystals. Some in the trade call it “pink crystalline quartz,” “crystalline rose quartz,” or simply “pink quartz.” Compared to massive rose quartz, it’s exceptionally rare. – Robert Weldonīesides the typical cloudy rose quartz, which is colored by inclusions, there’s a type of transparent quartz that owes its pink color to a different mechanism. This adorable piglet was carved by Gerd Dreher from rose quartz mined in Madagascar. The fibers likely crystallized out as the host gem cooled, and they’re aligned according to the crystal directions of the rose quartz. Advanced testing has shown that they’re generally similar-but not identical-to the mineral dumortierite. Research has shown that rose quartz owes its delicate pink color to microscopic inclusions of aligned silicate mineral fibers. It’s typically found in pegmatites, but also occurs in hydrothermal veins. Rose quartz is always found in massive form, so it lacks regular, flat crystal faces. The most appealing color typically occurs in larger sizes, and small rose quartz specimens with good color tend to be rare. It gets its name from its delicate pink color, which ranges from very light (almost white) to medium-dark. Rose quartz is one of the many quartz varieties used as a gem material. The oval gem-fourth from the right-is rose quartz, one of the less abundant gems in the quartz family. There are many attractive and well-known quartz varieties.
